Spring/Summer Classes & Demonstrations 2008

Classes help you build and expand the foundation for your knitting and handwork skills. Here, you can learn new techniques, improve existing ones, as well as share your knowledge with others. We’re excited to present a new line of classes for 2008. In addition to the regulars (e.g., Knit 101 and Socks), we will also have several topic-specific classes to entice you to challenge your knitting abilities. To register, contact us at 314.727.6500

In addition to our classes, we’re proud to begin our workshops & demonstrations. Every month, we invite you to come to the shop to learn about different knitting techniques such as shaping, blocking, cabling, and much more. These are topics we feel are quite interesting and that will definitely add to your knitting repertoire. Join us on each 1st Thursdays as we share with you a new topic. Demonstrations will vary in length, depending on the topic covered. Think of these as free classes. Just stop on by.

Knit 101 • Beginner’s Level

Always a regular and always necessary for those interested in finding out what the all excitement about knitting is about. In this 2-hr session, you will learn the basic skills of knitting as well as casting on and binding off. In addition, we offer a follow-up support session to help with problems, answer questions, and make sure you’re firm on your feet.

Supplies: worsted weight yarn and US size 8 or 9 needles

Tuition: $20

Lace

Lace is one of the most beautiful results of knitting. Consisting of strategically placed increases and decreases, lace knitting is certainly a form of artwork. Lace takes on many forms of identity, from Gossomer styles to heirloom shetland knits to the classic pi shawl. A bit of a challenge, but completely worth the effort. We’ll walk you through it in this 3 session class.

Colorwork I - Swatching Fair Isle

A perfect introduction to color stranding, swatching will allow students to familiarize themselves with the technique of colorwork. Learn how to hold the yarn, establish correct tension with each color, and read and knit from color charts.

Supplies: 24″ circulars US 3 or 4, Jamieson Shetland DK in two colors

Pattern Reading
Intimidated by all the abbreviations and charts? Wondering what “psso” or that “o” in the charts mean? Trust us. It may look like a foreign language, but it’s actually very easy to understand. This class will focus on charting and understanding text instructions

Luggage Bag

A large luggage bag is the perfect carry-all for your belongings. This class is a great starter to learn about design. Learn about bag design and construction, pouches and zipper pockets, and fabric lining. The first two sessions of this class will focus on design and construction, while the third focuses on lining and finishing. Sign up for the first two, the last or all three sessions.

Supplies: a list will be provided by the instructor.

Fix those Mistakes!

It’s very common that a knitter will proceed with a project, only to set it to the side (sometimes, for much too long) when a mistake has been encountered. While we’re happy to help you fix those mistakes, perhaps you’d like to a bit more independent. No reason why you should let your knitting intimidate you. Be in control. In this class, we’ll tackle the common dilemmas, and most importantly, help you recognize your mistakes.

Socks

Knitting socks is quick, fun, portable, and completely non-seasonal – for those who prefer not to work on a heavy wool garment during the summer. With so many gorgeous sock yarns and stitch patterns, the options are limitless. This class is offered in 3 two-hour sessions.Supplies: a supply list will be provided by the instructor

Tuition: $60

  • Cuff Down: Tuesday, May 20th & June 3rd & 17th, 6pm – 8pm
  • Cuff Down: Saturday, June 28th, July 12th & 26th, 11am - 1pm
  • Toe Up: Tuesday, July 29th, Aug. 12th & 26th, 6pm - 8pm

Private Lessons

Private individual and group lessons are also available should you prefer more one-on-one mentoring or would like to have a private class with friends or for children. These lessons are completely customized to your skill level and project interest.

Colorwork II - Advanced
If you’d like a bit of challenge, this lesson is perfect for you. This lesson will focus on two-color stranding as well as color and garment design. Come to the shop to see a garment sample.

Spinning on the Drop Spindle
Next to knitting, spinning is one of the most relaxing and soothing hobbies to take on. A great introductory to spinning, the spindle provides the beginner a chance to familiarize the self with the fiber, needed twist, and drafting of the roving.

Entrelac
This basketweave pattern is fun to knit and much easier than it looks. This beautiful pattern could be incorporated into any knitted piece, such as socks, garments, afghans, and much more. Use multiple colors or a variegated yarn to bring out its beauty.

Workshops/Demonstrations

Cast-ons & Bind-offs (June 5th)
Aside from the backward loop, knitted on, and long-tail cast-ons, there are numerous others. The same holds true for bind-offs. Come by and we’ll discuss with you the various methods of beginning and ending your knitted items. Learn about cast-ons such as the cable, crochet, Bavarian-twisted, elastic long-tail, provisional, or tubular cast-on. Also learn about bind-offs such as the EZ sewn, tubular, Russian, three-needle, or kitcheners stitch bind off.

I-Cord (July 3rd)
Elizabeth (Zimmermann) loves them. They’re wonderful borders for a garment. They make great bag handles and ties. Just as useful as can be and as easy to learn.

Cables (August 7th)
Cables look intimidating, but they really aren’t. This knitting technique is simply a matter of switching the direction of the stitches. Come learn the basic cable stitch and explore other forms of cabling, including mock cables, twisted stitches, and complex aran works.
