If you haven’t yet purchased yarn and are planning to participate in the KAL, here are a few suggestions:

First, a warning about colors. For lace projects, I avoid highly variegated yarns. Color contrast is fun, but too much of it detracts from the lace pattern. However, a yarn that has some subtle shading will add interest to any project, especially one like this, which has an extensive amount of stockinette.

Here are some ideas about yarns you may want to use:
The most obvious options: any of the sock yarns/fingering yarns. Spirit Trail Frija has 10% cashmere and is absolutely scrumptious. 2 skeins should be enough, but if you’re concerned about yardage, you can do 1 pattern repeat fewer than called for.

The ‘I want to try lace-weight yarn’ option: Thi has some new skeins of Alpaca with a Twist lace-weight yarn that are gorgeous. This is lovely, lovely yarn. Try size 4 needles and see if you like the results.

The ‘if I were to knit the shawl again’ options: Either Simply Shetland–Lambswool and silk (there are a few skeins of a lovely green that I think would be perfect for the shawl) or the Claudia Handpainted-Linen. The linen softens up a ton during working and with washing, and it would make a great summer shawl. It’s more of a sport weight than a fingering weight, but I’d be very tempted.

The ‘I want to be extravagant and treat myself’ options: Well, of course there’s 100% cashmere. But I think I’d lean toward the Spirit Trail Si Ling 100% silk yarn. I’m eyeing some of this for a future Estonian shawl!
