Saffron Jacket

While knitting the Saffron Jacket, I thought perhaps I would have the opportunity to wear the jacket at least once before the baby arrives.  Come to think of it, I could technically wear the jacket…. there would just be a 15″ lack of coverage around the belly which perhaps, may not be most suitable and could potentially elicit interesting stares.

Oh, well.  The jacket will just have to look just as nice on the body form.

The saffron jacket, found in Rowan’s New Shapes, is knitted out of Big Wool on US 13s.  As you may know, patterns for Rowan garments tend to divide the knitting for each section (e.g., sleeves, front, back, button band, collar, edging, etc.,) so that one may spend a long afternoon or two or three (!) seaming and weaving in the thousands and thousands of ends.   Though some knitters may find this enjoyable, NOT ME!

To eliminate as much non-knitting on the jacket as possible, sleeves were knitted in the round, and fronts, back, and button bands were knitted as one piece. After seaming the shoulders together and the sleeves to the body, live stitches from the button bands were picked up and the collar continued around the neck.

A band and pretty button secured the front of the jacket in place.

By the way, Eric noticed that my belly button was turning from an innie to an outie, and proudly proclaimed, “Almost time to take the baby out of the oven!”  Just two more weeks until the BIG arrival!

I’m getting excited for you! Although, you should totally walk around with your belly hanging out and make sure to start shopping at Wal-Mart so someone can take a picture of you and post it on http://www.peopleofwalmart.com
