It was bound to happen

Not that I have any leftover free time after knitting and baby-planning (and family, and home stuff and friends, and…. you get the gist).

I bought a sewing machine.

I was never really a sewer.  My skills were close to nill until my friend, Heather, offered to give me a lesson.  Remember my circular needle case?  Well, I love it, and I loved making it!  Pattern can be found here.

Then a few weeks ago, I took a beginner sewing class with some friends to make a tote bag.  As productive as I was in class, I didn’t get the chance to finish the bag so the instructor said, “Just finish it when you get home.”  Hmmm.  I didn’t have a sewing machine at home.

Well, there’s only one way to fix that.  Get one!

Baby Lock Maria 1

You like?  It’s a Baby Lock A-Line Maria series.   That’s just a lot of title for “a really good sewing machine”!  Isn’t she pretty?  I even like the silhouette of the damsel in her skirt and heels.

Look at all the stitches I get to make, using the machine.   So far, I’ve used A, B, and C.  The rest of them look a little intimidating.  Really, what’s going on with the I-L stitches?  They look pretty wonky.

So what did I do as soon I brought the machine home?  Finished that tote bag, of course.

Then the other day, Eileen and I spent a bit of the afternoon admiring and learning about the Gees Bend Quilts at the Missouri History Museum.   These quilts were so incredibly inspiring that we were both itching to run to the fabric store to start a quilt of our own or maybe just start sewing.  But first, we watched the PBS documentary and cried a bit because it was so touching.

If you’ve not seen this exhibit, please do so.  It’s wonderful.  The talented quilters of Gees Bend will be by at the end of the exhibit tour (Sept. 11-13th), and you can bet I’ll be there…. and probably crying again.

Btw, TJ, I know this is a knitting blog.

I wasn’t going to say anything–don’t act like you know me!

pleasure of meeting some of the Gees Bend quilters
(and they signed my book!)I also have taken up sewing and recently took a beginner class at Joann fabric store. Good luck with your sewing adventure!
