We went on our first alpaca field trip Saturday. I have to say, I think it was a success! Everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves. We got to see and pet alpacas, and at the end, buy yarn and roving created from the very alpacas we had just met.

Meet our group. This time around, there were nine of us instead of four. Because of this, the alpacas were more hesitant to come to the barn and greet us. However, Lita (in yellow in pic below) coaxed them with food, and they came a bit more willingly. Aren’t they adorable?!

Most were still wary of us and kept their distance. However, the key, I found, was to stand in the middle and let them approach me.

As you can see, it worked!

The alpacas are protected by two great pyrenees, brother and sister, Samson and Delilah. Unlike Delilah, Samson loves people and loved all the attention given to him.

Lita told us that Samson thinks he’s an alpaca too. Only the alpacas know that he’s not.

At the end, Lita showed us all her beautiful roving and skeins….. and yes, even the yarn shop owner had to buy yarn. What? The skeins were so beautiful and soft, I couldn’t resist.
