Siri, a knitter friend, told me that in order to keep herself sane, she maintains a strict Rule of 3. That is, have only three projects on the needles to ensure you do not bite off more than you can chew.
She does admit, however, that despite the “strict”, there may be times when she has more than three (i.e., now). But Siri adds, “It’s okay. I’m going to frog the ones I don’t like, and it’ll go back down to three.”
Siri’s a genius.
Now, me? I have no rule…. but perhaps, I should.
I have ten projects on the needles. Count them because every one of them is pictured here. I, apparently, am not sane… nor a genius.
I’ve been in denial, but now, I’m simply ashamed. How did I let myself get so carried away?
Rather than throwing out excuses, I will just admit it.
I HAVE TEN UNFINISHED PROJECTS.
The only thing to do now is to finish them or, as Siri might suggest, frog them. I’m dying to start on several sketches I’ve recently made, but am determined not to start another project until I’m at least close to the Rule of 3.

Let’s begin. The first picture is of an alpaca sweater coat and is an attempted recreation of the pictured garment. I decided to make this after viewing the piece in an earlier Anthropologie catalog. It’s still in its infancy because I’m designing it as I go. This garment will not be completed anytime soon.
These pocket mittens were knitted last year, and the pair is actually completed. What is left to do is to sew the pockets to the mittens and sew in the ends. So what is my problem? I don’t know. I just don’t know.
This strip of ribbing is (was) the beginning of an alpaca semi-argyle sweater vest. The initial plan was to add on the dark pink to knit the body and use the light pink to create argyle diagonals along the body of the vest. It turned out that the light pink diagonals were not visible enough, and now I’ve lost interest. This project will be frogged.
Oh, boy. This is my oldest UFO (unfinished object). Began perhaps two summers ago, I set this project down one evening and a few days later, was simply not interested in figuring out what row I was on. Now, it’s much too late. The best thing to do is to rip the project and maybe see it in another life.
This is the newest UFO. These are the hubby’s socks, began about two weeks ago and knitted in Dream in Color Classy worsted. I honestly do not know why this project was started. Obviously, I was still in denial.
These are my socks. Sometimes in our lives, we need a simple, mindless project to work on. This is my mindless project. I love them. Knitted toe-up, these socks are about as custom-fitted as they come. They hug the feet, and I can’t wait to finish them. Hmmm… I wonder when that will be.
This is my first square for the Afghan knit along. You can see how productive I’m being. ………..I hope that no one from the knit along reads this entry. Here’s a terrible confession — I just ripped the square because I lost my place and can’t figure out what row I should work on next. However, I have to start another square because frankly, who’s hosting the knit along?
The pi shawl is coming along well. The reason I’ve not knitted much on the other projects is because I had felt behind on the Thursday night knit along and began working like mad. Then I noticed a mistake and got a little aggravated.
Remember this one? It was pictured in an earlier blog and was supposed to be ready for December’s display.
Only it isn’t and may not be until the fall. I’d like to finish it because it’s going to look great. However, because it is a sweater, it would be more suitable as a (next) fall display.
Lastly, the chenille bathrobe. Because I’d like to have this displayed before Valentine’s Day (a little late, I know), I’m knitting like mad on this project as well. I simply have no choice but to finish it. Despite my ongoing complaints (e.g., the ill-conceived and written in haste pattern, the unexpected, and quite exorbitant, amount of shedding, the aggravation with the yarn itself, the deadline), I’m actually looking forward to the result.
In conclusion, because two projects will be ripped (i.e., sweater vest and summer tunic), one will be completed within the next 48 hours (i.e., bathrobe), and two need not be dealt with until after summer (i.e., pocket mittens and ribbed sweater), I technically have only five projects to finish.
What do they call that stage after denial? False reality?

I have a page of Unfinished Objects on my website to keep me in check, there are no more than three there, including the everlasting sweater project. So realistically, only two active projects at once. I’ve found I can only work on one pair of socks at a time, it’s too slow to see progress otherwise and I get discouraged. Right now I have a second sock, and a second mitten in progress.
i am so glad to hear that i am not the only one who leaves a project, forgets exactly where she is and then is not the least bit motivated to figure it out. i think i have 5 things on the needles…
I feel so smart right now.
ps Its okay for you to have a rule of 3 or 3 to the power of whatever you would like.
ahhhhhhhhhhhh, see, you’re just a little strumpetty with the knitting—- it’s okay!!!!
Love ALL of your projects! And you know, you don’t HAVE to finish then, you can learn volumes by just knitting at will.
Or something like that.
