The Knit Shop

It’s been about a month since our opening, and it has been so wonderful. Aside from having a job that’s allows me to knit whenever I want (YAY!), one of the things that I look forward to each day is meeting each yarn enthusiast, some more enthusiastic than others - you know who you are (LOL!). Who can ask for anything more? Oh, the smiles on their faces when they walk in the door, and how much fun it is to talk to others about the greatness of fiber and knitting! And the publications are particularly enjoyable- what fantastic, creative thinking they inspire in all of us. It makes for such pleasant days.

It’s amazing to see how brave and bold knitters are, how very unyielding even to the most challenging of patterns or projects. A new knitter came in recently and wanted to do, as her first project, a complex set of cable patterns for a purse pattern she found. The picture in this link is one of the cables she had in mind. We had to, first, however, learn how to knit and purl, but she was very determined and focused on her goal which I found quite admirable.

In fact, one of the most commonly heard statements is, “Oh, I’m just a beginner.” whether they’ve been knitting for a month or several years. What polite modesty! As Elizabeth Zimmermann states, “Every knitter is a great knitter.” I certainly agree with that statement. Knitting is a matter of making knit and purl stitches….maybe with a few tricks up the sleeve like the yo (yarn overs), psso (pass slipped stitch over), bobbles (some involving knitting and purling a ridiculous number of times through one stitch), complex cables, and a bit more, but all in all, we know how to knit, and we know how to purl. And most importantly, we love knitting which makes us great. :)!

I am thankful to be among others with whom I can share the love of knitting. The knit shop is such a wonderful place to be because of the knitters who visit it. Thank you.
